蔡晨阳,1988年11月生,江苏兴化人。现任中国科学院南京地质古生物研究所研究员、博士生导师,国际古昆虫学会(IPS)执行委员会委员、中国古生物学会古无脊椎动物学分会理事、中国昆虫学会古昆虫专委会和甲虫专委会委员。兼任中国地质大学(武汉)兼职教授、英国布里斯托大学Honorary Research Fellow。2010年7月毕业于山东农业大学生命科学学院,获理学学士学位。2015年7月于中国科学院大学(中国科学院南京地质古生物研究所)获得博士学位。主要研究成果包括:

一、昆虫亲代抚育的起源

系统研究了中侏罗世道虎沟生物群、早白垩世热河生物群和白垩纪中期缅甸琥珀中的葬甲化石,将葬甲化石记录提前了1.3亿年。通过对葬甲触角末端密布微型化学感受器的研究,证明中侏罗世葬甲是已知最古老的大自然清道夫。早白垩世葬甲腹背板发育两列发音锉,是抚育后代的关键构造,代表了已知最早的亚社会性昆虫(Cai et al. 2014, PNAS)。论文发表后激起化石节肢动物抚育后代行为的研究热潮。

二、昆虫化石揭示陆地生态系统功能的演化

率先在国内开展白垩纪缅甸琥珀生物群的研究,于2014年发表首篇由中国人领衔的缅甸琥珀昆虫研究论文,掀起了缅甸琥珀内含物的研究热潮。将激光共聚焦和荧光显微技术推广应用于琥珀内含物的研究(Cai & Huang 2014, Naturwissenschaften),在超微结构成像方面取得重要进展。

(1)结构色和生物发光:系统研究了白垩纪琥珀中多样化的具金属光泽的昆虫,发现纯净而强烈的颜色可在多种昆虫体表保存下来。利用琥珀超薄切片、扫描电子显微镜和透射电子显微镜等技术手段,揭示了青蜂体表的蓝绿色是由多层纳米结构(多层反射膜)形成,属于一种典型的结构色。证明了纳米级光学结构可在地质历史中稳定保存,否定了前人金属色不能在中生代化石中保存的观点,并对认识早期昆虫结构色生态功能的演化具有重要意义(Cai et al. 2020, Proceedings B)。在缅甸琥珀中发现叩甲总科发光甲虫支系的一个新科,即白垩光萤科,揭示了叩甲总科躯体软化和生物发光早期演化的关键过渡阶段(Li et al. 2021, Proceedings B)。在白垩纪琥珀中发现最早的萤火虫化石,代表中生代第二例萤科化石,揭示了中生代发光甲虫的形态多样性,为昆虫生物发光的起源与演化提供了关键证据(Cai et al. 2024, Proceedings B)。

(2)昆虫与真菌的关系:证明了白垩纪中期专性菌食甲虫的生物多样性(Cai et al. 2016, Proceedings B;Gimmel et al. 2019, Proceedings B);系统研究了缅甸琥珀中多样性的蘑菇化石,并对严格取食高等真菌的巨须隐翅虫进行功能形态学研究,证实了早白垩世蘑菇的多样性,并将蘑菇的演化历史推前了2500万年(Cai et al. 2017, Nat. Commun.)。在缅甸琥珀中发现多种现代仅分布于南半球的甲虫类群,如澳洲蕈甲科和球胸拳甲属,证明了其现生物种分布模式为孑遗分布,并揭示了其长期形态演化停滞的形成原因(Cai et al. 2019, Proceedings B)。

(3)昆虫与动物的关系:在缅甸琥珀中发现一类形态特化的毛螱隐翅虫,它们具有典型的防御体型。通过古今昆虫形态对比研究和功能形态学分析,证明其代表已知最古老的社会性寄生昆虫,揭示早期昆虫复杂的社会性寄生行为(Cai et al. 2017, Curr. Biol.)。发现2种突眼隐翅虫,罕见地保存了由下唇特化而来的捕食器官,可用来捕捉快速移动的猎物。证明了突眼隐翅虫在其演化的早期阶段已经进化出特殊的捕食器官,对理解特化捕食器官的早期演化具有重要意义(Cai et al. 2019, Curr. Biol.)。在白垩纪琥珀中发现了现生铠步甲属的成虫与幼虫,将铠步甲专性跳虫捕食机制的起源时间前推至一亿年前,并表明这一复杂捕食机制在白垩纪末大灭绝后至今未发生显著变化(Li et al. 2024, Innovation)。在白垩纪琥珀中发现附着于反鸟羽毛上的羽虱卵化石,代表已知最古老的虱类化石记录,揭示了羽虱与鸟类之间的寄生关系,为研究虱类起源及其与脊椎动物的协同演化提供了直接证据(Cai et al. 2025, Natl. Sci. Rev.)。

(4)昆虫与植物的关系:在缅甸琥珀中发现一类独特的扁甲及其所取食的苏铁粉,证明了甲虫与苏铁之间传粉关系的建立不晚于侏罗纪早期,远早于被子植物及其传粉者的起源和兴盛(Cai et al. 2018, Curr. Biol.)。论文发表后,掀起了国内外缅甸琥珀昆虫传粉研究的热潮。在缅甸琥珀中发现了一类极其罕见的短翅花甲标本,通过对其背部、腿部以及身体附近的真双子叶被子植物的三沟型花粉和花粉簇,以及两枚由相同花粉组成的长形甲虫粪便的研究,揭示了白垩纪中期甲虫为真双子叶被子植物传粉的直接证据,对理解昆虫与被子植物的协同演化关系的演化具有重要意义(Tihelka et al. 2021, Nat. Plants)。 

三、生命之树重建

(1)昆虫分子系统学:基于转录组数据,结合首次引入到昆虫系统学研究中的氨基酸矩阵的质量控制方法,去除原始矩阵中“噪音”,选用更贴合的位点异质性模型,重构了龙虱总科内部演化关系,证明了基于形态和分子证据的演化关系是完全一致的(Cai et al. 2020, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol.)。这套方法为昆虫乃至其他生物的系统发生基因组学研究提供了新思路。系统总结了当前昆虫系统学的进展、陷阱、解决之道和研究展望,提出分子、形态和化石的整合是理解昆虫多样性形成的核心要义(Tihelka et al. 2021, Curr. Biol.)。基于线粒体组和异质模型构建了西方蜜蜂各亚种之间的演化关系,提出西方蜜蜂可能起源于北非或中东的新观点,否定了其起源于欧洲或非洲热带的假说(Tihelka et al. 2020, Sci. Rep.)。利用转录组数据重构了竹节虫目的演化关系,解决了叶脩的系统位置;重新建立了竹节虫目的演化时间框架,证明冠群竹节虫起源于二叠纪—三叠纪,否定了竹节虫白垩纪起源的观点(Tihelka et al. 2020, R. Soc. Open Sci.)。基于转录组和锚定杂交富集数据,构建了一致且稳健的脉翅总目生命之树,证明了位点异质模型是解决组学数据间冲突的关键,并强调了模型选择在生命之树研究中的重要性(Cai et al. 2023, Palaeoentomology)。

(2)关键昆虫支系的系统位置:基于转录组数据构建了吸吻类(长翅目、蚤目和双翅目)骨架树,证明了跳蚤是现生长翅目小蝎蛉科的姊妹群,揭示了跳蚤是一类特化的蝎蛉(Tihelka et al. 2020, Palaeoentomology)。该关系也得到了中生代过渡型跳蚤形态证据的支持(Huang et al. 2012, Nature),这项成果将对昆虫分类框架产生深远影响。运用优化模型和基因组数据构建了蚂蚁骨架树,明确了火星蚁亚科的位置,否定了此前的主流观点,解决了蚁科系统演化中长期争议问题,为蚂蚁特征演化、生物地理及蚁类生态研究奠定基础(Cai 2024, Commun. Biol.)。

(3)甲虫生命之树:利用组学数据和位点异质模型构建了当前物种最多的甲虫分子系统树,并整合新筛选的一套化石校准点,构建了甲虫演化时间框架。证明基于分子数据的演化关系与经典形态学证据是相吻合的,提出甲虫分类新系统,并指出甲虫多样性形成并不能简单地归因于与被子植物共演化的假说(Cai et al. 2022, ESI高被引、热点论文)。基于新分类系统,与同行厘定了全球甲虫高阶元名称和分类系统(Bouchard et al. 2024, 981页,高被引论文),成为昆虫分类领域的重要参考书。激发了全球甲虫高阶元分类研究热潮,结果得到后续研究反复验证。被国际知名学者广泛接受,成为鞘翅目分类新标准,被写进Beetles of the WorldThe Lives of Beetles两部专著。基于组学数据构建了象甲生命之树,强调了数据过滤和模型选择的重要性,缓和了分子与形态证据冲突问题,推动了建树方法的优化(Li et al. 2023, Biol. Lett.)。
